"Rise of Descendants"

Tsk tsk Ant-Man, you are evil.... Quick background. It seems that Secret Avengers is going to be dealing with The Descendants for a few issues. For those of you who do not know who they are, they are a group of mechanical life-forms created by "Father" using the Orb of Necromancy. They live in the normal world not knowing their true nature until they are needed. It seems they are needed now.

Ant-Man is now refered to as Black Ant and has helped bring the other Decendants to the Secret Avengers base. The group consists of Yalda, Mother Origin, Urn, Emperor Doombot, Lady Deathstrike and a robotic Janet (Wasp). The group ransacks the base without much issue considering everyone is resting after their big battle in the past few issues.

Janet easily overpowers Henry Pym and Lady Deathstrike and Urn take out Valkyrie and Flash (they were in the middle of...let's say being nude) without too much issue. Especially since Flash didn't have his symbiote with him. He seems to be on his way to get it at the end of the issue but everyone else is worse for wear.

I almost forgot to mention that Captain Britain and Hawkeye are within the Omniverse to obtain the Orb of Necromancy. They enter the world that Captain Britain thought would be the safest, a world in which everything is undead already. He left it in the care of the Undead Avengers in realm 666. Of course the undead in the realm have decided to give the Orb to their god and they want to spread undead all through the Omniverse. Way to go Captain Britain...way, to, go.

I am iffy on this title. The last arc wasn't amazing and so far I am having issues connecting to the characters in this team other than Valkyrie, Hawkeye and Venom. Also, the art left something to be desired in this issue. I normally love Remender's work and have been holding out for the reason alone. Hopefully the next issue will be getting better or I may have found one of my first books to drop when Marvel NOW! goes into full swing.

"She's the End of the World"

Oh no dragons! That was my thought at the end of the last issue. It definitely picked up right in the thick of the action. Remy just doesn't give up, does he? I understand that people do crazy things for beautiful women, but I think Remy takes the cake. He fights dragons, goes into a dimension that causes him to almost die just because the atmosphere is so bad and he does it all for a girl who has betrayed him MULTIPLE TIMES!

Oh well, it is fun to watch him get himself DEEPER into trouble. I think that is the overall message of this book. If Gambit is left to his own devices, he will get himself into trouble because he makes poor choices. After his battle with the dragons (I am not certain they are dragons, but man they definitely look to be), Remy recovers and finally gets an apology from the girl...sort of. We do finally learn that her name is Joelle...yeah...took four issues for Gambit to get this girl's name. He also gets his smooch that is beyond well deserved...the punch isn't.

To continue with the trend of making terrible decisions, Remy jumps into a limo that he even states he should be wary about to be at the end of a gun held by Borya Cich's men. Who is Borya Cich? He is the guy Remy stole the weird artifact from way back in issue #1.

It is weird. I grabbed this comic on a whim. I know Gambit's previous comics have been flops and assumed this would be the same. So far, I am not thinking so. I think that perhaps James Asmus has such a strong grasp of Gambit as a character that this comic may have many issues to come.

AvX:Consequences #3

Publisher: Marvel Comics (Dan Buckley)
Price: $3.99
Release Date: October 24th, 2012

Although this issues still focuses heavily on Scott Summers, we are finally starting to see a little more of other people after the battle. Iron Man feel responsible for the damage in K'un-Lun but is told to worry about his own damage and assess himself. Emma Frost and Kitty Pride have a nice little conversation and it seems Emma is really unhappy with Scott. There are members inside of the Avengers who are not trusting Wolverine as much as they once did. Magik turned the location of her brother over to Storm and lastly, we finally get to see a little of Hope.

Hope's section was the most interesting to me. She is going to a normal school, blending in and trying to be normal. Of course, this doesn't sit well for her and now she is off on a mission to find Cable. I hope that it will tie into Cable and the X-Force that is coming soon OR that it is focused in the next two issues of this book.

On to the main focus, Scott Summers. He does defend himself in jail showing his ability in hand to hand combat and seems to be gaining a follower in his roommate. The only really interesting part is he pours a sugar packet on the floor and has a conversation with someone. I am trying to figure out if it is somehow Emma Frost and that she is pretending to hate him, Rachel Summers or someone else entirely. If anyone has a guess, I'd love to hear it.

So far, this was the best issue from the bunch. I didn't set it down completely angry that I spent the money on it. Hopefully the remaining two issues are as good if not better.

AvX: A-Babies vs X-Babies #1

Before I even put the people involved in this comic down I want to state that I am just writing it the way it is in the comic. It is silly (as is the whole issue) so please chuckle along.

Oh Marvel Babies...they are too cute. I don't call many things cute either. I honestly picked this issue up to one, round out my AvX collection and two, to laugh...a lot. I was not let down. The battle in this book revolved around the fact that baby Scott Summers stole baby Captain America's Bucky Bear. It is good to see even the baby version of Scott is a douche.

There are plenty of jokes thrown in this book and every moment is incredibly colorful and tongue in cheek. There is a great spread in the middle of the book of all of the baby versions of super heroes fighting one another...Gambit is doing a pick a card trick, Hawkeye is shooting suction cup arrows and Quicksilver is running away. There is also a great moment when Hulk busts into a room to fight Wolverine where there are alphabet blocks flying in the air spelling out "Smash".

As I said, this is obviously nothing that is needed but if you want a good laugh, don't mind silly drawings and seeing Galactus using the moon as a baby bottle, this is totally worth the $2.99 cover price.

"End Times: Part 2"

I feel like I am reading too many titles that are taking place in the Microverse....maybe it's just me. Oh well...this issue of Avengers was interesting and it answered a few questions. The most pressing one from last issue was, "WHO IS THAT GIRL?" We find out toward the end of the book who it is which I suppose I will not ruin it here.

There is another short interaction with Wonderman in this issue which is forcing me to believe he is going to play a larger part in this final "End Games" arc. After that we get some of the key players decide to go into the Microverse to chase the signal they got in the last issue. Pym (Giant Man or Ant Man at this point? I can never follow what his identity is....), Thor, Captain America and Iron Man go inside while leaving the rest of the Avengers behind to take care of the Earth.

Other than them entering the Microverse, some action with the girl within and the reunion of the team with her (whoever she is..wink) a villain is introduced on the last page, Lord Gouzar. All in all this issue was okay...I am still not as attached to the Avengers as other readers and because of that not biting my nails while reading. It is, however, growing on me. I am excited for this arc to end and see the revamp #1 that is on the way.

"Danger Zone Part Two: Key To The Kingdom"

BOOM right off the bat Madame Web is in a coma! Poor girl...at least her kid is somewhere safe...Peter isn't though. Remember at the end of issue #695 Phil Urich Hobgoblin snatched him out of the street while his spider-sense was super sensitive. It is quickly revealed that this was done NOT because it is known that he is Spider-Man, simply that he is the guy that makes all of Spidey's gadgets...
The remainder of this issue is obviously starting the set-up for the inevitable issue #700 that Slott has been getting a lot of heat about. Modell finally gets to see what is locked in Peter's special room in Horizon (tons of Spidey gear of course) and even seems to be starting to guess that Pete is the guy in webbed tights. Modell is able to get past this and retrieve the briefcase that Kingpin wants him to get to attempt to help free Peter. We finally see what is in the case as well, the Goblin Key which gives access to Norman Osborn's most valued cache of assets...fun stuff.

Enter Roderick Kingsley who inform Phil Urich that Urich had not killed him in the past, rather it was his brother that died. Battle ensues, Peter is able to break the spider sense scrambler, get his strength back and luckily get his web-shooters from Modell who came prepared. Seeing Peter use the web-shooters didn't exactly lower Modell's thoughts of Peter maybe being Spidey...it was bound to happen.

With a now stolen from Kingpin Goblin Key in hand and two Hobgoblins on pursuit, Modell and Peter are on the run. I have to admit, this action packed issue was exactly what I am looking for from a Spidey book and why I trust Slott in whatever direction he is taking this title when it becomes Superior Spider-Man. I wish I hadn't started my reviews with this one this week...the others are going to be lack luster....

Weekly pulls for 10/24/12

Another week in comics, another week closer to Amazing Spider-Man #700 and most importantly, another week closer to AvX coming to a close. One of my readers brought it to my attention that my reviews for AvX during the run were relatively positive and he/she (they were anonymous) wanted to know why I was being so negative post-event. I wanted to reiterate here that I didn't hate the event as a whole. Matter of fact, now that I am re-reading it, the event itself is not bad at all. The ending was just felt a little bit like a cheat and AvX Consequences is dragging its feet...but I will get into that here soon when I review the whole event once it is completely re-read. I currently just finish Round 5 so I am about halfway there.

My pulls this week, once again, were hefty and numerous. I think the other reason I am looking forward to AvX ending is because of all of the extra issues it has forced (not too reluctantly but still) into my hands. This week alone, post-event of course, there were two AvX issues and since I have been collecting thus far, I picked them up. I really will need to re-evaluate my pull list once this event is over, I read the new Marvel NOW! number 1's so that I am reading more concise titles that I really care about. I clung to a few titles I am not certain I would have because they have been attached to AvX. Regardless, that was personal preference and I know what must be done...

Moving past that, I am still enjoying my venture back into the world of comic books. I am excited for what Marvel is bringing to the table in the near future but I am starting to get an itch to spread my wings and see other things that are out there. One of the two guys I am doing the podcast with (Jonny) is still heavily reading DC and it seems that "The Death of the Family" storyline going on with the Batman titles seems solid. Other other guy in the podcast (Darren) is reading a lot more independent books and there are a couple there that are drawing my eye. We'll see what the future holds. For now, I am focusing on Marvel and hoping that Marvel NOW! brings some solid comics to the table.

On that note, the comics that I acquired this week were not too shabby:

The Amazing Spider-Man #696 (The Goblin War begins!)
Avengers #32
AvX: A-Babies vs X-Babies #1 (Obviously goofy, a lot of fun)
AvX: Consequences #3
Gambit #4
Secret Avengers #33

I shall move on to the reviews now and I will add AvX: Consequences to the AvX reading order when I am done. If you would like, head over here and give The Panel Scanners episode 6 a listen. We were a little off our game this time and I still haven't listened to it...but it should be fun regardless! We are talking about COMICS! Until then my friends, happy reading.

"Minimum Carnage Part 3: The Madman & The Microverse"

Oh Carnage...you are so evil....I love it. FINALLY we are getting the completely vicious, work with no one, Carnage that I was looking for in this series. Of course he is going to kill...he is going to try to kill EVERYONE. That is what Carnage is. He just likes blood, period.
I continue to love Flash Thompson as Venom. His internal monologues make me smile. "Captain's Log, Stardate blah-blah-blah" is how he enters this issue. He is trapped on a....err...space ship? In the Microverse talking to the Enigma Force. He learns a little bit as to why he is there and what is happening in the Microverse.

Kaine, the Scarlet Spider, is busy fighting a giant alien thing which he takes care of before he gets to know the Redeemer a little bit. He continues his travels with him only to end the issue running into Carnage...leads to an interesting Scarlet Spider issue coming soon.

As for Venom...well he is in the middle of a space battle and once again showing a lack of control over his suit...this series is one of the first times where it makes it hard not to wonder if Flash is going to end up going down the same path as Eddie Brock. Oh man, I hope not.

All in all, I am starting to enjoy Minimum Carnage. It started out a little shakey but I am excited for the remaining three issues if they are going to keep the pace that this comic started. I can only hope it doesn't let me down like AvX...at least this is only six issues...not the 70+ that was.

Uncanny X-Men #20

Writer: Kieron Gillen
Penciler: Carlos Pacheco

Publisher: Marvel Comics (Dan Buckley)
Price: $3.99
Release Date: October 17th, 2012

This is the aftermath issue, the final issue, the farewell issue...however you want to look at it this is the closing of Uncanny X-Men. It makes sense considering the leader of this team is now in prison. The sad thing is, there are a few new things added that are going to have to be taken care of in other X-Men comics in the near future that are brought up in this issue.

Thing #1, Sinister is still alive. He shows how he survived the attack on Sinister London from the Phoenix Five in this issue. It is interesting and sick, as Sinister tends to be. He also loves showing off in front of Scott Summers....

Thing #2, Danger is completely free to do what she wants. The question is, what is she going to do now that she has freed all of the prisoners from Utopia and is off on her own?

Thing #3, Magik and Colossus are no longer buddy buddy. There is a major rift between the two of them and what Magik does to her brother in this comic (I will not say what, you'll have to read for that) only makes him more angry at her.

The comic closes with Scott saying "This isn't over." I readily agree with him. I know there are no plans for a new Uncanny X-Men comic yet but there is still Wolverine and the X-Men and the new X-Men Legacy to pick up the pieces. I am interested to see what happens to our X-titles here on out.

Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #16

I look back to a few months ago and think about how I was so apprehensive to Miles Morales being Spider-Man. This also brings up the whole Superior Spider-Man debate about Spidey no longer being Peter Parker in the normal universe. With how well Morales is doing here and the fact that my original concerns are gone, I have faith in that comic because I love this one.

This is a continuation of the "United We Stand" story that is going on in the Ultimate Universe which I am still very not versed in considering this is the only Ultimate title I am reading. Regardless, the U.S. is in all kinds of turmoil and of course the Ultimates are trying to iron things out. With so much bad going on, Miles' school is closed and he is having the first true chance to just be Spider-Man. With this he has decided to try to join the Ultimates.

There is an incredible fight on the roof of the Triskelion between S.H.I.E.L.D. and Hydra which Miles and Captain America are in the middle of. Miles once again proves himself as a hero and does some crazy stuff. He even gets a chance to be part of the Hulkbuster squad.

It is amazing to see Miles learn how to use his recently acquired web-shooters and he impresses Cap quickly. It seems we may finally have a Spider-Man as part of the Ultimates.

Oh, did I mention that Captain America is now the president of the United States? Freggin crazy right? I am truly enjoying this comic...Bendis really knows how to write some Ultimate Spider-Man.

"End Times"

New Avengers without Luke Cage seems to be right around the corner. It is good to see the man decide to put his wife and child before his career as a hero but it is hard to think of this team functioning without him. Oh well, life goes on...

This issue opens with a what seems to be possessed version of Victoria Hand (liaison for the Avengers) going around "dealing" with some people. Notably, we see Daimon Hellstrom trying to explain to her that there is a disturbance who she quickly shuts down.

After the little intro we see the New Avengers discussing Cage leaving the team and helping him move out of his rather large mansion. There are a lot of jokes about people buying it from him for pennies (Spidey offers $13), and they discuss if there will still be a team after he leaves. This is still not clear by the end of the issue but I didn't expect it to be. We still have a couple more issues with Bendis writing New Avengers, can't have all of the answers already.

The issue ends with a bit of a cliffhanger making one assume that whatever had possessed Victoria is able to move to other hosts. The comic closes with it (or so it seems) inside a much more powerful host.

This was a fun comic. I like seeing the members of the New Avengers acting like friends and trying to see what the future holds. I am looking forward to seeing Bendis finish his run and see where the new #1 is going to start us out.

"Cherry"

Before I even get into this comic I have to say this. If you are not reading this book and you enjoy comics WHAT ARE YOU DOING? Go to your comic shop, find this issue and any back issues if you are able and get them. Seriously.....I'll wait....
Okay, you have them? Good....moving on. Three months in a row Matt Fraction has not let me down. This little action packed comic makes me smile so broadly that I feel like a little kid again. This is what a comic is supposed to be. There are levels of humor mixed with action and human emotion that blend together into a piece of art.

This particular issue deals with Clint Barton trying to organize his arrows with Kate Bishop. Sounds boring right? It isn't...see...they don't get time to finish sorting them because Clint has the worst luck. The fact that he happened to not have tape to label his nocks leads him onto the street where he tries to purchase a car. From there the excitement ensues.

Here comes my one issue with the comic. So far it has been unclear as to if Clint is with Jessica in this series and we get an idea that he may not be. I know this is a stand-alone series but that makes me a little sad. Oh well, small grief with something so great.

I don't want to get into too many details other than the basic synopsis because you really should be reading this book. The addition of Kate Bishop since issue #2 has added a level of comedy to it that I didn't think possible. So, if you haven't caught on yet, BUY THIS COMIC. That's all I've got to say about that....

UGH! Dragging our feet much Marvel? This comic is a conversation between Logan and Scott. That's it in a nutshell. Logan wants to kill Scott, Scott wants Logan to kill him so Logan doesn't kill him? Ugh...

Obviously Logan isn't thrilled with Scott's choices and to be fair, Scott isn't completely happy with his actions. Regardless of this, he thinks that the ends qualified the means. The fact that there are new mutants makes everything okay and in all reality that he was right from the moment he knew that the Phoenix was coming for Hope. He thought that it was coming for a rebirth and technically it did.

Other than the conversation which wasn't terrible but also wasn't riveting or surprising; there is an interaction between a now mutant inmate and Scott discussing how and when he got his powers. It may be foreshadowing him building a small mutant resistance in jail even though he doesn't really want to resist. The comic ends with a rather large man and some other thugs approaching the new mutant and Scott with knives. Scott claims to be a martyr and stands waiting. I will not be shocked if at the beginning of #3 the new mutant just wipes the floor with the other guys in one panel.

As I said last week, this comic is not screaming "read me" but it is closing up the rather large event of AvX. If you are already invested in the series, give it a read. If not...save your cash.

Weekly pulls 10/17/12

I feel like I am doing this post later and later each week. I am sorry to all of my readers. This week was especially busy due to my having a taste of the flu, recording The Panel Scanners episode 6 (we haven't posted it yet), trying to learn Heroclix and being busy doing progress reports and a ton of grading for my job as a teacher.

With all of that said, I have also been slacking on my Amazing Spider-Man retro reviews. I intend to get to issue 100 (I am on issue 98 right now) and then do a big review for that portion of the reading. After I do that I am taking a short hiatus from reading ASM to re-read Avengers vs X-Men from beginning to end so that I can have a fresh on the mind review of the whole event. As of right now I am not really happy due to the ending but feel if I read it all again I may come out with some fresh new insights. Not only will I do a review of that here on my blog, I will also do a rant/argument/discussion with Jonny and Darren on The Panel Scanners episode 7. I have given myself a month to read something that spread over six...wish me luck.

On to this week in Marvel comics. I am a little torn about some of my issues ending but am DEFINITELY happy to see my wallet getting less drained each month. So far I have averaged about six comics a WEEK this month due to AvX consequences, new Marvel NOW comics and Minimum Carnage. I am always happy to have a lot to read, but I limit myself on how much "free" money I have to spend in a month and this is starting to push it. Curse my love for comics....

This week was no different than the last few, I obtained six new comics, most of which were quite good. The pulls for the week are as follows:

AvX: Consequences #2
Hawkeye #3
The New Avengers #31
Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #16
Uncanny X-Men #20 (THE LAST ISSUE!!!!!)
Venom #26 (Minimum Carnage part 3)

As you can see, there is one cancelled comic in that pull as well as a mini-series (that needs to end already). As always, my reviews are to follow this post and I will update my AvX reading order. I have a few comments to respond to as well. Until then, happy reading!

"Dance Like There's No Tomorrow"

I truly hope this is the last AvX "tie-in". To be fair, the majority of the reason why this is considered to be so is because the final battle is going on during the issue and they notice the death of Xavier on Cerebra and the appearance of new mutants at a time that they didn't notice a different one vanish (I won't ruin who...)
Regardless of its not so important ties to AvX, I truly enjoyed this issue as I do all issues of Wolverine and the X-Men. Jason Aaron really captures how teenagers act as well as the adult uncertainty of everything that is going on around them. It is still unclear as to what exactly is going to happen at the school after everything settles down such as who will actually be teaching there and who all will be attending. It is, however, clear that there will be one less teacher and it seems one less student after the end of this issue.

Also, the appearance of the Hellfire Club is becoming more prominent and they will definitely become a major focus in the coming issues. I am not sure what they are up to...but it is something really bad. Also, I can't let you guys down so I translated the one panel of Doop speak while he is talking to Warbird:

"You know. My wounds have healed from the last time."...kinky...I think.

Anyhow, this was a strong issue and it is painting the path for what is to come. I am still standing by that this is one of my favorite comics at print.

"New Union"

It is no secret that I was super excited for this title and I am not sad that I was. There is a lot going on here and there are a lot of characters involved that I love. But the first thing to mention is that if you are looking for Logan's eulogy of Professor Xavier, this is where it is located. It is very full of emotion and it really shows how much Logan has grown over the years as a person.
Later there is a serious exchange between brothers, Alex and Scott Summers. It is made very clear how Havok feels about his brother's choices. Alex is quickly offered the leading role of a new Avengers team by Captain America himself which he is incredibly reluctant to accept.

Soon after we are shown the grave site of Xavier with two long time enemies having a "discussion", Rogue and Scarlet Witch. Rogue is definitely still not happy with Wanda but they are interrupted before their fight can get too big by some new mutants that are under the control of Red Skull. They are there for a malicious deed that I won't share but it isn't too surprising...

All in all this was a fun issue and I am excited to see where it goes. I think this is going to be the place to really see where human/mutant relations are heading. Remender is still not letting me down....

Secret Avengers #32

Release Date: October 10th, 2012

"To Hold Back a Black Hole"

The Abyss has taken full hold and this is the Secret Avengers last chance to stop it! Seriously, this is some dark stuff going down and it is cool to see that the darkest Avenger, Venom, is around to do some damage. He is truly earning his Avengers card in this mission and he is finally proving himself to Clint Barton. The crazy thing is that he teams with Ant-Man and that together they are pretty unstoppable.
In all reality this issue is chock full of a lot of fighting, dark images and interactions between the Secret Avengers that are gold. I personally love the fight on the plane between Hawkeye and Black Widow as well as the mid-air battle between Valkyrie and Venom. Hero against hero in this type of setting is fun to read.

After an exhausting battle Captain Britain informs the rest of the team that there is something big going on in that arctic, Black Widow states that she does not trust Ant-Man (for good reason) but Hawkeye decides to ignore it and take a break for the evening. I hope that isn't the worst mistake he has made as a leader....

Remender has my attention in this book just as he did in Venom...I hope he keeps it up.

"Minimum Carnage Part 2: Inner Space"

After a quick refresher of Minimum Carnage Alpha #1 we jump right into Flash and Kaine not really getting along too well. It is concerning to see that Flash isn't as in control of the symbiote as he thought...maybe it is the fact that Carnage is around that is causing it...who knows?

After the initial "I don't want to work with you!" moments the readers finally get to dive into the Prometheus Pit which leads to Inner Space and the once again separated Flash and Kaine. So far it isn't going well and there seems to be some sort of war going on within Inner Space that the two Spiders got themselves involved with.

It is still incredibly unclear as to who Carnage's little friends are but it is clear that they wanted him for his murderous intents. I am just still very confused as to what is going on inside Inner Space and in reality how this is going to come to a close. Then again, this is only the second issue of a six part series and there is a lot to be excited for. I just need to control myself, realize that I may have over-hyped this a bit and that it is still quite good. Next week we will get more Minimum Carnage in Venom #26. I have high hopes that I will be able to catch up and that I will start to understand the why by the time I close its pages.

Naughty naughty Hypno-Hustler. Brainwashing Spidey with the help of Deadpool to break out of prison. That was really a bad choice for you. Do you know what else is a bad choice? Trying to get into Deadpool's mind without expecting bad results.

Just like last month's issue I really enjoyed reading this. Seeing inside of the craziness that is Peter Parker's mind is crazy...what is more crazy is seeing inside of Wade's mind. Wow... I found each incredibly well drawn page forcing me to smile. There is specifically a wonderful page that was "Censored by the man!" that made me chuckle. Granted, the ending was fairly obvious but it was still a lot of fun to read.

I am beyond happy I didn't drop this title when I started questioning it. These past two months have brought me joy and a lot of craziness which is great considering how serious everything else I am reading has become. I am fighting my urge to purchase the new Deadpool comic that is coming with Marvel NOW! due to these issues specifically. I know a lot of people badmouth the recent handling of Deadpool because he has become too slapstick, but I really enjoy it.

If you are looking for some colorful art, some laughs and a strong self-contained story pick up Avenging Spider-Man #12-13. You wont regret it.

"End Times"

The comic opens with a mysterious Avenger on an alien planet trying her best to get in touch with her companions on Earth. With very minimal writing and a lot of gorgeous art the story kept my attention without fail. I am relatively new to the Avengers, and I have grown more attached to them thanks to Brian Michael Bendis' writing. This issue did not fail there.
After the mystery beginning, the reader sees other Avengers recovering from one of the biggest battles of their lives. This is the correct way to highlight the passing of the AvX event by showing flickering news channels in front of Captain America showing the repercussions from recent issues. This is quickly broken into by Wonderman talking to Steve, apologizing for trashing the Avengers mansion and humiliating them on television (this event I am not familiar with due to being a newer reader).  Red Hulk wanted nothing to do with it and takes him on....it is kinda of a cool brawl.

The comic closes with a discussion of the fight and the Avengers getting the message from the girl in (what we learn to be) Inner Space. I am definitely not certain what is coming but if you are keeping up with Marvel NOW! you should know "End Times" are exactly that. The end of this run of The Avengers and The Avengers as we know them. I am excited to see what is coming....strong issue.

AvX: Consequences #1

It makes sense that people are not happy with mutants...This comic is starting to show the wave of crap that Scott Summers caused his fellow mutants and how unhappy they are all about his choices. There is especially a lot to worry about with Wakanda and who is welcome there (definitely not Storm).

It is still a little unclear if Hope retained any of the Phoenix Force but there are references throughout this issue that its presence is totally gone from the planet. There is also mention of Hope just trying to live life as a normal person which we all know is impossible for her after everything. Captain America seems to want her to be part of the Avengers which may happen in the future but for now she is off on her own.

Coming away from this issue it felt a lot like it focused on Wolverine swallowing his pride and anger so that he can confront Scott about everything and for him to find a way to move mutants past all of the chaos that had fallen on his people. I want to say a lot happened in this issue and it seems like it did but in all reality it was pretty stagnant. Even Xavier's funeral is only briefly mentioned here and is instead in Uncanny Avengers #1... Also, the art is sort of weird. I can't put my finger on it exactly but it seems like the proportions of a lot of people are off and Logan's face is just awful.

I am happy that I have given up the numeric rating system. It wasn't working for me and I felt like I was either way too easy or too harsh. All I can say about this issue is that if you were interested in AvX and you want to see what is happening with some of the main players, pick it up. I am looking forward to Wednesday's new issue but I am not as excited as I was initially for this one.

Weekly pulls 10/10/12

This has been one heck of a week and to be fair, I had one heck of a pull list. I am sorry it took so long to actually post this week but I should be getting all of my reviews up before the end of today. I think I also had to take a step back before writing everything this week because Marvel stabbed me hard by not letting AvX just end. I was surprised to see that Wolverine and the X-Men #18 was another tie-in issue and to be fair, it was hardly even that. Also, I get the purpose of AvX: Consequences but I am not certain that it required its own title. I think the same thing could have been achieved through the normal, ongoing titles that Marvel releases that were tied to the event. Alas, what can you do? I guess the fact that I am still purchasing the issues means that they won...ugh.

On another note. I did actually acquire my paper copy of Minimum Carnage Alpha #1 this week and was thrilled! My comic guy surprised me by having it in my pull list for the week and he gave me a bunch of cool Marvel NOW! stuff to ease my mind for getting it a week late. I think I enjoyed reading it a lot more in a paper version versus electronic and I followed it more. I am happy to see it continue basically weekly until it comes to a close.

Now, with the addition of Minimum Carnage Alpha #1 my pull list was a new high of eight books. I knew this would happen until a few of my current comics end and there are mini-series such as AvX: Consequences that are making it thicker but damn was I shocked to get so much in one week. I hope the pain is a little less this upcoming week while at the same time I like all of the reading. So the books other than my accounted for pull of Minimum Carnage Alpha #1 are as follows:

AvX: Consequences #1
Avengers #31
Avenging Spider-Man #13
Scarlet Spider #10
Secret Avengers #32
Uncanny Avengers #1
Wolverine and the X-Men #18

Yikes, writing it made me think about the insane amount of reading I did. I also continued reading Amazing Spider-Man which I may review...I think I may start making that a bi-weekly blog due to my crazy amount of other reading.

Two last things. Number one: after we record The Panel Scanners episode 6 this week I am taking a short hiatus from reading Amazing Spider-Man so that I can focus on re-reading Avengers vs X-Men so that for The Panel Scanners episode 7 I will be prepared to talk about the whole thing. Related to that, you can find all of the old episodes of The Panel Scanners here, and there is a clone of my blog resting there as well in case you want to read it twice.... Number two: I am considering tackling Heroclix as an added addiction/money-suck/fun thing to do. I'd love to hear your thoughts as my readers if that would be worthwhile, fun, or even if any of you do it! I love hearing from you.

Whew, that was a large post only to be followed by more. The AvX reading order will continue to be updated until there are no more DIRECTLY related titles so I would assume until the end of AvX: Consequences. Well, on to writing my review blogs....happy reading my friends.

"The Passion of Scott Summers"

This comic is simply an aftermath book. We get to see the final fight with the Avengers through the perspective of Scott Summers. His whole life flickers before his eyes. He sees and remembers that everything that happened was for Hope...not just the girl but hope for the mutant race.

There is a quick interaction between Beast and Cyclops discussing what happened. Cyclops accepts that fact that he was the one that killed Professor Xavier and he gets confirmed that there are now new mutants in the world. I loved the final page with Scott standing outside of the tent with his arms crossed into an X before the sun. To him, the mutants won.

I, no matter how I feel about Cyclops, really enjoyed this issue. We get to see the finale of crazy that is his brain and we get and idea of what is going to happen to his post AvX...I am going to miss Uncanny X-Men and am interested to see what the final issue holds.

Avengers vs X-Men Versus #6

I am sad to see this comic go. The fights in here have been great. I have laughed, clung to pages and probably read this series more times than anything else during the AvX event. This issue was no different for me. The first fight between Hope and Scarlet Witch takes place during the early pages of Avengers vs X-Men round #12 while they are settling their differences. Hope's ability to mock everyone's powers as well as her recent kung-fu training definitely showed during this battle. My favorite moment (other than the cheap shot finish) was when Hope headbutted Wanda proclaiming "No more nose!"

The rest of the issue was sort of cool as well. It wasn't the normal format of two large fights but rather page spreads that represented random fights that had no real attachment to AvX other than the cast members. Each one was pretty silly and meant to just make the reader smile. I personally liked the Iron Fist vs Iceman two page spread as well as the comedic last page of Squirrel Girl vs Pixie. It seems they were playing with The Puppet Master's mind-control clay with shapes of Avengers and X-Men....oye.

No matter how ridiculous this issue was I have been left smiling. There was a lot of gold in Avengers vs X-Men and I really hope that readers out there can see the silver lining and back off of the somewhat predictable ending....

Minimum Carnage Alpha #1

Writers: Cullen Bunn, Chris Yost
Art: Lan Medina
Publisher: Marvel Comics (Dan Buckley)
Price: $3.99
Release Date: October 3rd, 2012

How would it not make sense for the two most unbalanced Spider-Heroes, Venom and Scarlet Spider, to take on one of the most violent villains in the Spidey-verse, Cletus Kasady: Carnage? This ingenious idea to bring Flash and Kaine together has finally come forth after my many months of waiting and spewing excitement everywhere. But the question remains...is it good?

So far I am still excited for what is to come. This issue was a complete set-up issue for getting Cletus out of jail and introducing his strange tiny companions and the contraption called the Prometheus Pit. Of course it can be assumed that the main story is going to take place around if not within the Prometheus Pit and that there is something inside of it that will benefit Cletus.

As for Venom and Scarlet Spider, it was easy enough to get them together. Have a massively murderous man escape jail, check. Has a government agent who is also an Avenger chase him down, Venom check. Have the Prometheus Pit reside in Texas, Scarlet Spider check. Of course Kaine will have issues with any symbiotic creature, Venom and Carnage alike and in reality they don't know one another.

The sad thing about this issue is we don't get a lot of interaction between Kaine and Flash. As most issues at the beginning of an arc, this was a building block for the issues to come. It wasn't anything phenomenal but it shows definite promise for the story that will trickle out in the next five issues. I am excited to read this and of course if you are a fan of Carnage, Venom or Scarlet Spider this is a worthwhile pickup because the next two months will be riddled with this storyline.

WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD

This is what we have all been waiting for. The epic conclusion to Avengers vs X-Men, the drawing in point for "Marvel Now!". Before I wrote this review I decided to check out the buzz around the internet to see how people felt about the conclusion. It seems there is the normal negatives and positives but sadly more negatives. People are looking for plot-holes, they are tearing apart the way characters were created and of course saying that Marvel is a bunch of money hungry punks that will do anything to cash in on their books. Yet, out of all of the things I read, the thing the upsets me the most is the amount of people that are mad about what happened with Scott Summers.

There is a constant joke between myself and the guys that I do the podcast with that no one really likes Cyclops. We feel that he is a whiney punk that gets mad when things don't go his way. It can be argued that this is 90% of why AvX even happened. It seems that in all reality there is a plethora of people who not only love Cyclops, but support every decision he made during this event. I even saw people state the he was totally in the right to kill Professor Xavier and that he has no reason to feel bad about it...ugh.

Other than my distaste for the comments about Cyclops; everyone is allowed their own opinion, I want to comment on the plot-holes that are evident throughout this event. It is obvious there will be small issues when you have an event spreading over that many titles and in all reality, most of it made sense. Of course the things like the five light theory was not really touched on and Hope's training was left to the imagination. With Hope sitting around doing nothing for 90% of the event, it was surprisingly not a shocker to see her finish things off.

As for the book itself. It wasn't terrible. I think I am one of the few Marvel readers out there who truly enjoyed AvX. Maybe it was because I was not reading comics for so long that the lapses in characterizations of characters such as Captain America didn't have that much of a negative effect on me. Maybe because I wasn't super attached to any characters anymore and was relearning everything made me a bit detached...or maybe...just maybe...people want complete perfection is a cross-platform event while in reality, with that many authors involved, we still got something worth reading. This set up the main focus of the Marvel Universe for the upcoming months with "Marvel Now!" and was pretty much the epic conclusion for "House of M"....

The art for this book was nice, clean and full of action. Cyclops showed his strength by battling heroes all over the world which also highlighted the speed and power of the Phoenix Force. Even with everything looking so bad...everyone saw Hope still as a flicker of light. The fact that Hope was able to take out Cyclops with the help of Wanda (Scarlet Witch) was not a shocker at all...I expected it (at least the Hope half.) Even though it wasn't surprising, it was still done well. The Ying-Yang aspect to the two women to balance out the world and the Phoenix Force was a nice touch. With the banishment of the Phoenix Force, "No more Phoenix" and the return of Mutants, there is a lot to like about the conclusion. I do want to note to the people out there that are saying it is impossible to destroy the Phoenix Force....They didn't destroy it. They displaced it from the planet. We know as Marvel people that if the Phoenix were to be destroyed the universe would flicker out.

With Cyclops taken out and locked up for what one would assume to be an eternity for his crimes against the world and his murder of Professor Xavier, there is a lot of wonder as to what will happen with the now destroyed Utopia and the X-Men as a whole. It seems that perhaps Wolverine's school is going to be incredibly busy. Although I do not like Cyclops, I do like his response to learning about the events of after he lost his mind and was taken down by Hope. He has regret for what he did to Professor Xavier but he doesn't show it significantly because he is overjoyed that he was able to be a part of bringing mutants back to the world. This is looked at a bit more heavily in Uncanny X-Men #19 which I will review later.

In closing, I am not saying AvX is perfection. It isn't. Not many things in this world are. There are incredibly weak moments in the narrative but there are a lot of moments that made me smile, made me gasp, and made me bite my lip in anticipation for what was to come. If you are still torn on this event or if you are just listening to what others are saying, read it for yourself. I am not saying pour the hundreds of dollars into it that you would need to in order to read every piece of it, but reading everything adds to the experience. I think reading the core books only would cause you to leave with much more of a sour taste in your mouth. Just know that everyone has their own opinion and there is a lot to be enjoyed here. Remember what it was like to be a kid exploring comics for the first time and seeing those characters struggle with something that any of us wouldn't know how to handle. If you can get in that mindset and just think for yourself, you may catch yourself smiling a bit as well.

Now I can't wait for Marvel NOW! There is a lot going on in the Marvel Universe, there are a lot of new mutants to meet and a lot of pieces to pick up. I want to be there to pick them up...

Amazing Spider-Man #695

Writers: Dan Slott and Christos Gage
Pencils: Giuseppe Camuncoli

Price: $3.99
Release Date: October 3rd, 2012

"Danger Zone Part One: Warning Signs"

The end is coming...we know it is coming...it is impossible to ignore it. Slott said a couple months ago that The Amazing Spider-Man #700 was it and that in issue #698 something big and bad was going to happen. There are SO many things that can go wrong at this point that it is hard to choose which thing will happen to Spider-Man if not everything. I am getting ahead of myself again though...

On the heels of Alpha finally being out of the picture we are getting a major tease that Spider-Man's identity may be common knowledge again soon. See, there was a slight glitch in Doctor Strange's spell to make everyone forget Spidey's identity from "Civil War" was if he ever outted himself in any way it would break the spell. He, not thinking, did so during "Spider-Island" but at the time no one made the real connection that he was THE Spider-Man. With this happening, people can now make the connection again that he is our web-head.

Enter Sally Floyd and her report of "The Man Behind Spider-Man"...aka Peter Parker. It has become common knowledge that Spidey gets his gadgets from Horizon Labs and it is revealed, in a newsreport, the Peter is the one making these things. People MAY be able to connect Peter to Spider-Man...they may not. This is one of the many things that Slott is throwing at people to make them come up with their own conclusion of Amazing Spider-Man.

On top of all of this potential release of who Spider-Man really is, we have Tiberius Stone working with Phil Urich (curreny Hobgoblin) and The Kingpin figuring out how to manipulate Spidey... Tiberius has figured out a way to retrofit the contraptions used in Spider-Island that helped with his spider-sense to make it think that the smallest danger would harm him, causing it to flare constantly. While freaking out from this, Phil Urich captures Peter who just had the report about being the gadget creator released...it is unclear if this is because he knows he is Spider-Man or if he does it to draw Spider-Man out.

Also we have Madame Web sending her daughter off to live with her grandparents in Colorado so that she isn't around for what she saw coming. It seems Julia Carpenter knows her death is coming...Oh...also...Roderick Kingsley, the original Hobgoblin, is back and ready to come after Phil Urich. Whew...is there a lot coming or what?

Slott promised us a lot in these final few issues and he is not letting us down. It is cool to see Gage working with him as well but makes me wonder if perhaps Gage is taking over for Slott after #700 with the inevitable Spidey title coming in January. I do want to say that I am loving this arc and will be sad to see Amazing Spider-Man go. Let's all enjoy these coming final five issues....

Avengers Academy #38

Writer: Christos Gage
Inker: Cory Hamscher
Colorist: Chris Sotomayor
Artist: Tom Grummett
Publisher: Marvel Comics (Dan Buckley)
Price: $2.99
Release Date: October 3rd, 2012

This was one of those comics that I was not super excited for but had a blast reading it. Seeing Avengers Academy square off against Wolverine and the X-Men in a flag football game sounds relatively lame. But if you really think about the fact that the adult Avengers and adult X-Men have been beating each other into oblivion for the past few months, it is nice to see some "friendly" competition.

I have stated in the past that I am not overly attached to the characters in Avengers Academy but this seems to be changing. I have started to enjoy seeing X-23, Mettle, Hazmat and the others living their lives and trying to figure out how to live with their powers. I am starting to see why people are sad that this title is coming to a close at the end of the month and I see how much Gage poured his heart into his story and characters.

That said, this issue was a lot of fun to read. There were a few embarrassing moments that I hate to admit I laughed at; such as "Don't taze me, Jo!" while Jocasta used her shocking power to control people who decided to take the game too seriously with their powers. There is also a silly little penis joke with Mettle, Rockslide and Hazmat.

My favorite joke of the issue was when Gambit was attempting to give tips for picking up ladies to Reptil and his style is referred to as being a "Pepe Le Pew" schtick. I love Gambit, I do, but man is that right on point.

Lastly, it seems I need to do a little Doop translation from early in the issue. These translations are in order that they appear in the comic:

1. "You get chippy with me, kid, I'll suck you into the extra-dimensional void in my mouth and you can kiss the backup brain in my butt."

2. "Mess with the bull, you'll get the horns."

This was truly a fun comic and any fan of Avengers Academy or Wolverine and the X-Men would not be upset if they pick it up. It is nice to see Avengers and X-Men work together again and it is painting a picture for the future. It is more important now more than ever that heroes get along with mutants....if you read Avengers vs X-Men round 12 you know what I am talking about....

Weekly Pulls 10/03/2012

Another week, another haul. It is incredible to think that six months ago I wasn't even reading comics and now I average five+ books a week.... Honestly, I am sad that I have been away from this artform for so long and it is hard to not dive in further. There are a ton of books coming in the near future that I am excited for and some that I just can't seem to convince myself to purchase.

Firstly, I have had a reader or two of this blog telling me to pick up the new Captain Marvel comic...I want to...I do. It is just so hard to convince myself to read a book about a character I am not super attached to while I am reading so much more! I am also debating picking up Uncanny X-Force and Cable and X-Force comics that are right around the corner...I want them but that will make my pull list immense and hard to persuade myself that it is necessary. I was also shamed this week when I spoke to my comic guy and told him I hadn't read any of Remender's run of Uncanny X-Force...it seems that it may be on my backlog once I finish ALL of Amazing Spider-Man....oye.

As for this week...It is crazy to think that all six of the books I picked up this week were either conclusions to series, one-shots or soon to be cancelled titles. I guess once all of that happens it will give me a chance to re-evaluate my comic pulls...that wont be until December though.

Now, as for my lovely pulls of the week:

Amazing Spider-Man #695 (Will be cancelled at #700)
Avengers Academy #38 (Will be cancelled at #39)
Avengers vs X-Men Round 12 (Final Round)
Avengers vs X-Men Versus #6 (Final issue)
Minimum Carnage Alpha #1 (One-Shot)
Uncanny X-Men #19 (Will be cancelled at #20)

I am sad to see these titles coming to their end but am also happy at the prospect of starting to read some new stuff. Maybe this time around I will read less Avengers, X-Men and Spider-Man (this is very doubtful). Until my reviews, happy reading.

Amazing Spider-Man #48-60

Frequently I hear my DC friends discuss how they watched Dick Grayson grow from Robin to Nightwing. That he started off as a kid and grew into an adult. I whole heartedly feel that Peter Parker is Marvel's Dick Grayson. Peter started off as a high school student who is learning how to deal with his powers, balance his real life and be successful and he grows into (what I know now) as a great scientist working for Horizon. If you follow Peter from the beginning to see him age and mature which is not common in comics.

At this point in the story of our friendly neighborhood Spider-man, Peter is a college student who is learning how to have a roommate (Harry Osborn), balance two women (Gwen Stacy and MJ Watson) and somehow have time to websling without anyone really realizing it. On top of all of that his Aunt May is still struggling with her health and is convinced Peter is a frail young man.

While Peter is struggling with his personal life, his life as a superhero is becomming more difficult. He has a lot more people out to get him while he wears his webbed tights and because of this life has become a lot more difficult for him. Most notably during this span of comics we are introduced to Kingpin and Doctor Octopus has returned to destroy his arch-nemesis.

Starting with Doctor Octopus, he is still very much a criminal and there is a lot of bad going on. First he finds an base and tries to trap Spider-Man there with a trip bomb...he fails. Soon after he decides to become a renter from Peter's Aunt May. Of course as soon as Peter sees him he loses his cool but is threatened by Doc Ock to not say anything or Aunt May would get it. He comes in as Spidey and May has yet another bout with passing out and hospitalization.

Peter quickly goes after Doc Ock after he steals the Defense Department Nullifier which is supposed to nullify any electronics that it comes in contact with. During their fight, Doc Ock uses the Nullifier on Spider-Man in an attempt to deactivate his webshooters but instead it responded to his strange chemical DNA and forces Spider-Man to lose his memory. Doc Ock takes advantage of this and uses him to help him commit some crimes. This of course backfires due to Spidey having an engraved hate for the Doctor and he is able to get him arrested and he flees before the police can arrest him as well.

Peter is able to regain his memory thanks to a follow-up fight with Ka-zar. Ka-zar was convinced by J. Jonah Jameson that Spider-Man was a villain and must be stopped. During the fight Ka-zar knocks Spider-Man out and he falls into a body of water. The shock from falling into the water restored his memory and Ka-zar realized he was fighting a good guy and not a baddy.

The last major thing going on (and it is still happening so I can't give a conclusion yet) is The Kingpin is back as The Brainwasher and he is trying to take over the minds of the most powerful people in New York. One of these people just so happens to be Captain Stacy, Gwen's father, who Peter had recently met. During a short meeting with Captain Stacy, Peter asked too many questions and was attacked by the Captain which Gwen walked into Peter defending himself. Of course Gwen thought Peter was attacking her father and quickly threw him out of their house. Way to go champ...he had just started getting closer to her too.

With Captain Stacy brainwashed and Spidey going after The Kingpin the following issues are bound to be full of excitement. As I read each issue of this series I am becoming more and more enthralled with the story-telling. It is so hard to believe this comic has been running for 50 years! 60 issues in and I am excited to read all the way to 700...hopefully the Clone Saga during the 90s doesn't hurt my head too badly.

Anyhow, that's all I've got right now for Amazing Spider-Man. I do want to mention quickly that MJ is still annoying me greatly...Gwen is my winner thus far as Peter's great love...too bad I know what's coming for her....

Happy reading guys. If you get the chance to ever undertake something like this, you should. It is completely enjoyable to see how much comics have progressed over the years.

X-Men Legacy #274

Writer: Christos Gage
Penciler: David Baldeon
Inker: Jordi Tarragona
Colorist: Rachelle Rosenberg
Letterer: VC's Cory Petit
Publisher: Marvel Comics (Dan Buckley)
Price: $2.99
Release Date: September 26th, 2012

This comic is catching a lot of heat out there in the internet world for being weak. The fact that it focuses on two of the world's most powerful mutants and that they struggle to save a few people from a subway wreck really humanizes them and makes me like them more. I don't think it weakens the story telling, I think it makes it feel real.

I have always like Magneto and I have gained a new love for Rogue after reading X-Men Legacy for a while now and I like the decision that she makes in this issue. I like that Gage is closing this series so neatly and is setting us up for Uncanny Avengers that is coming out later this month. I will definitely miss this title, but it is nice to see it go out in this way. Nothing too epic, nothing too blood drenched, just decisions made by people who have truly grown over the years.

I don't want to rate this issue. I think it is quite good and if you like Rogue and Magneto, especially if you like their relationship, you should read it. If you could care less or think that if people that powerful struggling with helping a single person is stupid, stay away from this issue. Happy reading comic fans...enjoy your last two issues of X-Men Legacy, something new will replace it, but it will always have a warm spot in my heart.

"Wolverine's Secret Weapon"

Oh Doop...how badass you are? Is that what I am supposed to take away from this? That Doop is scary? That he is weird? That he is...Doop? I guess it doesn't really matter...at least I know what he is doing at Wolverine's school...

I guess that came out bad...in reality I really enjoyed this issue. It is nice to see a break from the blastfest that is Avengers vs X-Men and to see that there is definitely life after the battle. Doop is in the school as a defender...a person who will do things that no other X-Man would be willing to do. Wolverine knows this and keeps him on staff to do exactly that...keep the bad stuff quiet and taken care of.

I liked the Howard the Duck cameo as well as the random Nazi bowling league moment. Every once in a while it is cool to see an issue of a great comic that takes a beat from the action and just lets you smile. I also think it is cool to take the time and translate what Doop is saying. If you are interested in doing that you can go to the translator here and translate the issue. If you are lazy or just don't want to waste the time here are the translations.

Cover: If you think this is ridiculous, just wait’ll you see what happens on the inside.

1. I think I’m good right where I’m at. Too bad you didn’t ask back when being an X-Man still meant something.

2. Suit yourself.

3. Hmm….. I’m thinking about it.

4. We’ll talk more after you’re done.

5. Okay. You win. I’m yours.

6. Who…

7.  You can say that again.

8.  If you insist.

9. Kill them all. Or die trying.

I am pretty sure that covers it. Although there was light action in this book and there was no actual progression to the story of Wolverine and the X-Men it was a fun issue to read. I give it an 8/10...give it a read people...

"Into the Void"

The power of the Abyss has taken over the Masters of Evil as well as a portion of the Avengers and that is no good. With the team of Ant Man and Venom, the remaining Secret Avengers are trying to infiltrate the Masters of Evil and get their friends back while stopping the power of the Abyss. This is of course a lot harder than anyone could hope.

Venom and Ant Man are working really well together and it is nice to see some exchanges between these two. My initial iffy feelings toward this arc is starting to wan as it tends to when Remender takes the reigns of anything I am reading. I am actually quite excited to see how it plays out and with Valkyrie waiting to battle the two heroes, the next issue is promising to pack a wallop.

I don't have too much else to add to this without sharing too much of the story but it is definitely worth the read if you like Venom or Ant Man. I am starting to have a problem giving numeric values to comics and I feel like this is probably the last week I will do that other than a read it or don't type concept...but this is a 7/10. Give it a read folks.

Gambit #3

Writer: James Asmus
Pencils: Clay Mann w/ Leonard Kirk
Inks: Seth Mann w/ Leonard Kirk
Colors: Rachelle Rosenberg
Publisher: Marvel Comics (Dan Buckley)
Price: $2.99
Release Date: September 26th, 2012

I have to admit that his series is surprising my so far. I wasn't sure how to feel about a new Gambit series considering the last one wasn't great...but as of now, Asmus has my attention. I started off not knowing how I felt about the pacing...it started slow and even though the first two issues had some good action not a lot of actual progression was going on and I was starting to think that Remy was going to have the weird alien artifact buried into him for a good ten issues or more.

I am no longer upset about the pacing...I think it is giving the readers a chance to learn more about Remy and his new companion as well as how different this story may step out of the norm. The action sequences grab the reader's attention and makes you want to see how it plays out. Not only is this series growing on me, it is starting to become a comic I am really looking forward to each month.

I am a little shakey on the ending of this issue with the fantasy direction the series may be heading but I have complete confidence in Asmus' story telling and am excited to see what is to come. I give this issue a strong 8/10 and am excited to see where it is going.

"Alpha Part 3: Final Grade"

After Peter's call out at the end of last issue it was interesting to see what he would do to make there be "No more Alpha." Well, it became very obvious why he felt that this would be a necessity by the end of this series, Alpha is way too powerful for his own good.

After the immense growth of Alpha's strength (he can use moer than one power at a time) Peter knows it is time to shut him down. He has no respect for anything and simply wants the popularity. There is truly nothing more frightening than a hero that doesn't care what his attacks does to the city around him.

One of my friends recently told me that he thought Alpha was going to be a major player in Marvel NOW! and I was not on board. I understand why they introduced Alpha and I know that he has the potential to come back even after the events of this issue. I just hope that if Alpha does come back, he is more in control of his power and able to contain himself when he needs to.

Even though I was not a major fan of Alpha as a character (person), I really enjoyed this arc. It reminds the reader how much Peter cares about his decisions and how much he wants everyone to be alive. He will do any and everything for peace to exist and will even put himself on the line if it means he can save others.

Lastly, the teaser at the end with Kingsly....wow...I am excited for the next issue. I give this issue a solid 9/10 and am so sad to see this title coming to an end.
